It is the only non-professional national league that is organized by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). The competition was created in 2013 as Campeonato Nacional de Seniores (Seniors National Championship) to replace the Portuguese Second and Third Divisions (third and fourth tiers of the Portuguese football league system, respectively) for the 2013–14 season. On October 22, 2015, the competition was renamed to its current designation. ==Format== The first season was contested by a total of 80 clubs, which included 19 teams from the District Championships, 39 from the Portuguese Second Division, 19 from the Portuguese Third Division and three teams relegated from the Segunda Liga during the 2012–13 season.
